Local-first screen recording and search for macOS, all data stays on your device
Alternative toRewind AI
Visit retrace.to ↗What is Retrace?
Retrace is a macOS application that continuously captures your screen activity and makes it searchable through natural language queries, all processed locally on your device. The project describes itself as an open-source alternative to Rewind AI. It uses OCR text extraction, full-text search, and a timeline interface to help users find anything they've seen on screen, with advanced compression storing months of history in 10-15 GB per month.
Built with privacy as the core principle, Retrace stores all data in a local SQLite database with no cloud uploads, login requirements, or third-party access. The application includes a dashboard for app usage analytics, global hotkeys for quick access, privacy controls to exclude specific apps, and the ability to import existing Rewind data. It is MIT licensed and open source.
